C&R Equipment Ltd. was established in 1954 by Messrs. Vince Chapman and Gordon Rae when Vince Chapman, a Logger and sawmill operator of 40 years experience, saw a need to improve the equipment used in the Logging and Milling industry. His determination to produce high quality Logging equipment was the foundation of C&R Equipment NZ Ltd, Christchurch.

The firm's reputation grew and in 1956 it was necessary to move to larger premises. Later these premises were expanded to cater to the increased demand for the company's products. By 1960, the company had developed into the leading supplier of Logging equipment in New Zealand.

The ensuing 30 years saw the company expand into various projects, including the supply of dragline equipment to the Nelson Harbor Board and Lifting Gear for the link spans at the Ports of Picton, Tauranga and Lyttelton. The company also secured a large contract for a gate lifting winch drums, sheaves and fabrication on the Waipori Dam Project, and in 1986 a further contract for the supply of four double drum winch units for the Clyde Hydro Power House Spillway Gates. Also during this period, the company moved into the production of Marine Dept. certified blocks for crane and general lifting purposes. In order to do this, the company produced a tensile testing machine of 100 tonne capacity.

The company has recorded a number of "firsts":

• 1973 First in New Zealand to install a scanner profile cutting machine.

  • 1981 First to install a plasma cutter in New Zealand.
  • 1984 First to install a Laser Cutting machine in New Zealand's South Island.
    
    A number of products have been developed for the fishing industry and, in addition, various structures including radio and television masts, airport baggage handling equipment, soundproof booths for larger machines, aircraft lifting equipment and a steel sculpture have been built to specifications supplied.
    
    The purchase of the Coherent-EverIase 325 Carbon Dioxide Laser Cutting Machine and Jet CAM computer programming system has enabled the company to expand successfully into a new field where by plastics, timber, steel, bakelite, leather, rubber, cork, slate, ceramics and many other materials can be cut in intricate shapes with complete accuracy.
    
    C & R Equipment NZ Ltd. has continued its commitment to engineering excellence, reliability and service, with the result that its products are now exported to Australia and other Pacific countries.
